IRS Announces 2016 HSA Limits

The Internal Revenue Service has released the inflation-adjusted 2016 dollar limits for health savings account ("HSA") deductions, and the minimum deductible amounts and maximum out-of-pocket expenses for high deductible health plans ("HDHPs"). By law, these limits are indexed annually to reflect cost-of-living adjustments.

For calendar year 2016, the annual limitation on contributions to an HSA for individuals is $3,350, which remains unchanged from 2015. The annual limitation on HSA contributions for family coverage is $6,750, which is a $100 increase from 2015.

To qualify as a HDHP in 2016, a plan must have an annual deductible of $1,300 for self-only coverage, and $2,600 for family coverage. For calendar year 2016, the maximum out-of-pocket expenses permitted for a HDHP (including deductibles, co-payments and other amounts, but not premiums) is $6,550 for self-only coverage, which is a $100 increase from 2015, and $13,100 for a family, which represents a $200 increase form 2015.
